Northeast District History
During World War II eleven Districts were created at National Convention in 1941. At that time many Chapters were going inactive because of the war and a District gave Chapters a sense of unity across the nation. In 1949, 1955, and 1969, the Districts were reorganized due to expansion of both Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma nationally. The organizations shared the same boundaries and District Numbers. Boundaries were designed so that each District was strong and balanced. The most recent restructuring occurred in 1987 at National Convention where the District Numbers were retired and names were designated.
The first District designation of the present day to include the Northeast was the Eastern District. From 1949-1955 District X and XI occupied the boundaries of the Northeast District. The organization of District Lines was redistributed at the 1955 National Convention and caused Districts X and XI to be redistributed to allow balance with the expansion of both organizations. District X consisted of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. District XI consisted of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, District of Columbia, Virginia, and West Virginia. Both Districts agreed to meet together for District Convention in 1958. This was also the first time that Tau Beta Sigma was present at a Convention in the Northeast. In 1969 District IX was created as the combination of Districts X and XI. In 1987 the District was designated the Northeast District and continues with this designation today.
The first Chapter in the Northeast District was the Nu Chapter of Long Island University (inactive today). Our National Hymn was written by the sisters of Beta Eta at the University of Maryland College Park and was accepted in 1977. The Affirmation was written by the sisters of Eta Alpha at Syracuse University. The National Cheer was developed by the Eta Delta chapter at Howard University and was accepted by the 1999 National Convention. The first Women in Music Speaker was hosted at the Northeast District Convention at Clarion University (Now known as Pennsylvania Western University - Clarion) (Home Chapter: Delta Omicron)
